Gus has spent his entire life in Fort Worth, graduating from Paschal High School and Texas Christian University. He entered the life insurance business in 1966 as an agent with John Hancock. He has had a very long and rewarding career in the financial services industry and is a long-time qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He is most proud of the number of people and businesses he has helped by his diligent work ethic and the genuine care and concern for those he has been fortunate to call clients and friends

Gus has been a tremendous mentor and leader of the company that carries his name. His loyal and long-tenured employees are a credit to how he treats people and how they all feel about him. His motto, “don’t tell me how much you know, show me how much you care” is core to how Gus Bates Financial Services operates today.

Gus has exemplified servant leadership over his lifetime. He donated both time and money to causes he strongly believed in, even helping transform the sports complex, “The Gus Bates Center,” at Paschal High School. He served on several non-profit boards, including The Easter Seals and the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Worth. He helped influence many industry associations both locally and nationally, and may be most known in the community as “Coach Bates.” He believes sports are an important way for youth to learn life lessons and the tools necessary to help them overcome adversity and be successful adults.

Gus loves his hometown of Fort Worth and his TCU Horned Frogs. He married his sweetheart, Sheryl, while in college. They live close to TCU. They have two children, four grandchildren, and a great grandson.
